WELCOME TO YOUR NEW GIRL GANG {ft. books, music, movies, and tv series}

Welcome book galaxy travelers! Today is all about those girl gangs, strong women who support each other and deal with their ups and downs together. The other day I was listening to one of my favorite songs ever called Girl Gang and got the brilliant idea for this blog posts. In this blog post, there will be awesome girl power music, books that feature amazing female friendships and movies and tv series that show you the most amazing girl gangs you have ever seen. I really hope you’ll enjoy all of my recommendations.

I want to thank my very close friends Diep and Sue for helping me with the book recommendations. I would like to think we are our very own Girl Gang (we have a name and everything, the only thing missing is the matching jackets, to be honest). I love you girls, thank you for everything. If you haven’t already, you really need to check these two out. Sue can be found on Twitter, Instagram, Goodreads and on Hollywood News Source. Diep can be found on Twitter, Instagram, and Goodreads. Now onto the Girl Gang recommendations.

Music Recommendations

Let’s start this post with the playlist I made. It’s filled with powerful songs that make you just want to celebrate yourself and all the women in your life. Check it out below.

You can listen to the playlist on Spotify here or YouTube here, and you should totally listen to it while reading the rest of this post. There is nothing like good music to set the mood. The playlist is filled with songs I’m sure you’ll all have heard before plus some new goodies I hope you’ll really enjoy. You can also listen to the playlist down below.

Book Recommendations

To go with the playlist I also have lots of books to recommend you, with lots of different kinds of female friendships and girl power in them. I love all of the books I’ve read out of these and can’t wait to read to the ones haven’t since they come highly recommended from dear friends. These books range from middle grade to adult in age category but amazing girl gangs and female friendships exist in them all.

girlgangpost4

I’ve listed the books after the age category of the books, from middle grade to young adult and then new adult and adult. I’ve linked the books’ Goodreads and Amazon pages after the titles and their genres.

  • Amina’s Voice by Hena Khan. Add it on Goodreads and buy it on Amazon. The genres of the book are middle grade, realistic fiction, contemporary, and religion.
  • Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn. Add it on Goodreads and buy it on Amazon. The genres of the book are fantasy, superheroes, romance, and graphic novels.
  • A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi. Add it on Goodreads and buy it on Amazon. The genres of the book are young adult, fantasy, and romance.

Except for the first two books, the rest of the books I will list below have an older target audience than the first ten books I mentioned in this Girl Gang post. However, what these books all have in common are the female friendships and a strong display of women supporting other women.

  • Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta. Add it on Goodreads and buy it on Amazon. The genres of the book are young adult, contemporary, and drama.
  • The Piper’s Son by Melina Marchetta. Add it on Goodreads and buy it on Amazon. The genres of the book are young adult, contemporary, and romance.

  • The Paths We Choose by M. Hollis. Add it on Goodreads and buy it on Amazon. The genres of the book are new adult, contemporary, LGBT, and romance.
  • Infini by Krista & Becca Ritchie. Add it on Goodreads and buy it on Amazon. The genres of the book are new adult, contemporary, and romance.
  • Treasure by Rebekah Weatherspoon. Add it on Goodreads and buy it on Amazon. The genres of the book are new adult, romance, LGBT, and contemporary.

  • Serving Pleasure by Alisha Rai. Add it on Goodreads and buy it on Amazon. The genres of the book are adult, romance, erotica, and contemporary.

I hope among these 20 books all featuring amazing women you will find at least one good fit for you. I believe there is a girl gang out there for everyone and what better place than to find it in a great book.

TV Series Recommendations

I also want to recommend a few tv series I follow that are filled with women supporting other women. Girl Gangs like these ones are just what you need when you want to binge something fun. If you haven’t watched these shows yet, you need to get on it.

girlgangpost3

All of these TV series are still running except for one, Devious Maids, but I can assure you that all of these shows will provide you quality entertainment and lots of female empowerment. The shows recommended are Star*, The Get DownThe Good Fight, Jane the Virgin, The Fosters, Devious Maids, Younger and Reign. Their names are linked to their IMDb pages. A bonus show to mention is Girlboss, which I just started the other day. I’m currently loving it and it fits the girl gang vibe to a T.

* this show needs a content warning for sexual abuse, transphobia and substance abuse.

Movie Recommendations

However, what is a recommendations post without a few movies? Not complete! All of these ten movies celebrate female friendships in one way or another and you will love watching their journies. When women stick together it’s seriously amazing and I loved watching it in these movies. I would recommend all of these movies. Some of them are older, some are newer, but at the core, they are all great (and also pretty funny) movies where female friendships play a large role.

  1. Olivia, I love this! Great post! I hope you’ll do more of these in the future 🙂

  2. Reading this post was so much fun!

Also I love that you put John Tucker Must Die on the movie list. I watched it so many times when it came out back in the day because it’s just hilarious and sneakily feminist. And I love the idea that girls can come together even when they seemingly have nothing in common. Thanks for sharing all these recommendations!
